Confessions and a Peek Behind the Curtain

Well, hello, stranger!

It’s been almost three weeks since the last time I wrote, but it feels like it’s been forever.  I’m really sorry for being incommunicado – I like it much better when we chat every week.  But here’s my confession:  I simply haven’t made time to write.

There has been a LOT going on with me this month, business-wise (the month of MAY I Have Another includes 17 new workouts and 5 new 10-Minute Tuesday videos, with all of the attendant creation, filming, editing and graphics-making) and personally (my husband ran a 100K race, my kids finished up their track season with three meets in one week and an end of the year banquet, and – packing quite an emotional wallop – my oldest son is graduating from high school tomorrow, which of course means going to parties and having family in town).

My running mileage is down, my stress level is up, I’ve taken on an important-but-tedious task regarding my YouTube videos (that I’m going to tell you about in just a minute), and honestly?  Right now?  I feel like in this juggling act of work, life, exercise, and sanity that I am dropping more balls than I’m catching.

And that feeling – the one I had when I sat down at my computer this morning, already overwhelmed with the enormity of what I needed to accomplish in two short hours before my kids come home from a minimum day at school and demand my attention the way all kids do – is the reason I stopped trying to find the time to blog and am instead making time to talk to you.  Maybe you need to hear this message as much as I do:

You can’t do everything and that’s okay.

I (probably) don’t know you in real life, but I feel pretty confident in my assessment that you and I are pretty much always doing our best.  We make priorities (family first, everything else after that) and we try to fit everything in.  And sometimes, we have to make the tough decision to put something that is usually quite important to us on the back burner while we take care of everything else.

And you know what?  The world did not come to a screeching halt when I didn’t blog for three weeks, and I promise you that it will not grind to a stop if your workouts are sub-par this month, or if your eating is leaning a little closer to fast food than fresh food.

You will survive busy times and hard times and lazy times and you will keep on doing your best to get to your health and fitness goals.  Sometimes working out and eating right will be your number one priority and sometimes it will be much (much!) lower on the list, but let me tell you this:  as long as it’s on the list, you are doing great.  Give yourself a pat on the back for all the things you are managing to accomplish, don’t sweat the ones that are sitting on the sidelines, and keep moving forward.

It’s all we can do.

So, aside from nagging my kids to study for their AP tests, wringing my hands that their final projects won’t get done in time if they don’t get off their phones, looking through old photos and wondering where the time went, and pacing my husband on the final nine miles of his 100K, what have I been doing??

I’m so glad you asked.

By a popular request (made in the Killer B Hive – my private and super fun and engaged Facebook group that I would love for you to join), I am adding full workout descriptions and breakdowns to all 326 of my exercise videos on YouTube!

No small task, that.  And made much more difficult by my own disorganized nature.

You might think that I have breakdowns for all my old workouts saved on the computer in well-named files somewhere or maybe written tidily in a leather-bound book with notes about how difficult it was and the equipment I used.  Thank you for thinking so highly of me, but you, my friend, couldn’t be more wrong.

My oldest workouts were scribbled on scraps of paper that have long since been lost in the tangled mess that is my desk drawers, my car, my purse or possibly the garbage can.  Newer workouts were at least written in a single notebook (now two notebooks), with the idea that I could go back and reference them in the future.  But you know what vital information is missing on most of those pages?  Dates.  Video titles.  Any revisions that were made (and there are always revisions) between the original idea and the actual workout.  You know, everything that would be helpful.

Pahla B's (nearly useless) workout notebook with breakdowns for over 300 full-length exercise videos.

One hundred pages – front and back – of nearly unreadable chicken scratch.

Essentially, I’m having to re-watch every single video and write the breakdowns anew, which is just as time-consuming as it sounds.  But it’s also kind of fun – some of those older workouts were pretty terrific!  🙂  And I feel good that it’ll be helpful to you and other Bs in the future, making it easier to search for specific kinds of workouts with or without certain exercises, and giving you the ability to read the breakdown and know at a glance if it’s suitable for you and your needs.

No promises as to exactly when this project is going to be complete, because, as you know, sometimes things get done right away and sometimes they don’t, but I’m going to keep plugging away at it.  Oh!  And I’m trying really hard to take better notes these days, too.  Because, wow, I don’t think it could be worse.

Finally, to end things on a happy note, here’s a picture of my cat Rosy, who was thrilled when I put my workout notebook down on the ground to take a photo.  Surely, I had put it there for her.  (If you have a cat, you’ve seen this expression before:  “Mine.”)

Rosy the cat working on her fitness. Sitting on the workout notebook is just like working out, right?

Cheers to getting back into my regular weekly posts in June,
