Fighting the Good Fight

The longer I stick around the fitness business, the more I realize that the message I’m putting out there – eat healthy foods, exercise, practice self-control, look at the big picture and think about life-long health – isn’t a popular one.  I mean, on some level, I think everybody understands the value of moderation, and probably agrees that it’s the best way to live, but it’s not easy.  Moderation isn’t fast, it’s not extreme, it doesn’t make promises of huge losses in a short amount of time.

Moderation isn’t sexy.

And we live in a world where everybody seems to be chasing the fast, easy, extreme, sexy “fix.”  As though there is a finish line somewhere and you can eventually be done with eating right, sleeping enough, drinking plenty of water and exercising daily.

But I’m here to tell you, there is no such thing.  Sorry if that’s not what you wanted to hear, but it’s true.  Drinking shakes for six weeks isn’t going to do it.  Working out for your “summer body” shouldn’t end when fall rolls around.  Fitness is something you’ll have to work on for the rest of your life.  And that’s a good thing!

Here’s the other thing I’ve learned from being in this business:  being fit, feeling fit and living fit is awesome!  Eating right and taking care of your body won’t always feel like drudgery.  There comes a turning point, and it’s different for everyone, but you’ll know it when you get there, when all of a sudden you enjoy working out.  You will happily make good food choices because you know you’ll feel better afterward.  Sleep will become a priority.  You’ll be thirsty for water instead of soda.  You will be one of those annoyingly cheerful people who gladly gets up early and posts photos of your workouts on Instagram.  Yes.  You!

But it isn’t going to happen in 21 days.  It isn’t going to be extreme, and it won’t be a magic pill, but I promise:  it will be totally worth it!
