When I was a kid, I had an absolutely wonderful teacher who was all about good grammar (something I also hold dear – maybe because of her? – but frequently abuse in this modern age of writing how I speak). When you would ask her a permission-type question, it was very important to phrase it properly, because if you asked, “Can I go to the bathroom?” she’d respond with, “I don’t know. CAN you?”

I think of her so fondly every MAY. 🥰
