Competitive | Mini Challenge 28

I have a question for you: do you think of yourself as COMPETITIVE?

I fought against that word for a long time, personally. As the youngest in my family, I grew up wanting desperately to compete but always losing.

So eventually, I simply stopped trying.

But inside, I still felt competitive. (We all do, in fact. It’s part of our biology!)

As an adult, I’ve learned to enjoy competing at SOME things. Running, in particular.

A friend who doesn’t run recently asked me about my training, and asked if I was a competitive runner.

I felt compelled to explain that I enter races, and I compete against myself, but I’m not competitive. Meaning, I don’t win anything.

Not my fastest time, but I had a truly fulfilling 25k race performance yesterday.

That conversation got me to thinking about the nature of being competitive, and how I’ve learned to be satisfied with giving whatever my best effort is on a given day, knowing that I definitely won’t win and I might not even be as good as my own previous best.

There is a very deep pleasure to be had from pushing all the way to the edge of your current abilities.

And maybe it’s not even about being competitive, because there’s such a “happy surprise” feeling when you perform well and don’t compare it to other people or even yourself.

This week’s Mini Challenge includes exactly this opportunity for you: To explore your limits with a particularly challenging workout (there’s one in each category!) and see how they feel.
